Quick Fixes For a Dated Bathroom

When was the last time that your redecorated your bathroom? If it's been 5 or more years, then it's probably time to revitalize your bathroom decor with a new look. The truth is that many homeowners never redecorate their bathroom. Once it's set up, they continue to use it year after year while paying little attention to its aesthetic value. Unfortunately, an old, dated bathroom decor will take away from the rest of the home's beauty, which is why it's important to update it every couple of years.

Eliminate The Floral Designs

Now don't get me wrong: I'm a huge fan of incorporating authentic flowers and houseplants into the bathroom decor, but using floral designs in wallpaper, decorative accessories and fixtures often creates a dated appearance. If you're trying to update your bathroom with a fresh new look, you should consider removing floral designs from the decor.

As the old saying goes -- out with the old and in with the new -- holds true when redecorating a bathroom. You must remove old elements, such as floral designs, and replace them with something more modern and up-to-date.

Go Bold

If you viewed ten different examples of old, traditional bathroom decor styles, you would probably notice most of them (if not all) share a similar characteristic: the use of neutral colors. Designing a bathroom around neutral colors is a safe way to ensure it doesn't clash with the surrounding furnishings and accessories, but it also offers very little in terms of aesthetic value. Opting for a more bold choice of color creates a modern appearance that really improves the bathroom decor.

Don't Forget The Accessories

One of the most common mistakes homeowners make when decorating their bathrooms is not accessorizing it. This is especially problematic in dated bathrooms, as the lack of accessories hurts the decor even more. By using the right accessories in your bathroom, you can easily create a more modern appearance that benefits your entire home.

Bathroom Accessory Ideas:

  • Teak shower bench
  • Contemporary braided rug (choose a water-resistant material like vinyl)
  • Candles
  • Houseplants
  • Vases
  • Glass bowls filled with beads

Keep It Clean

You can't expect to achieve a modern-looking bathroom if it's dirty. Try to get into the habit of cleaning your bathroom on a regular basis, scrubbing the tile grout, mopping the floors, and paying extra attention to the vanity and mirror. Maintaining a clean bathroom naturally encourages a more modern appearance.
