5 Common Home Decorating Mistakes To Avoid

Successfully redecorating your home isn't always an easy task. If it's not done right, your efforts could actually hurt your home decor rather than improve it. And to make matters worse, some people take the wrong approach to decorating. The first step towards achieving an aesthetically pleasing home is to avoid the following mistakes.

Mistake #1 - Poor Furniture Arrangement

The furniture arrangement plays a critical role in the home's overall appearance. Simply pushing all of the furniture up against the wall will take away from your home's natural beauty by spreading it out. Instead, consider the traditional L-shaped furniture arrangement for the living room and analyze the dimensions in each room to determine the best course of action here.

Mistake #2 - Same Colors

Using the same colors in your decorating efforts will result in a bland appearance that does your home no justice. There's certainly nothing wrong with using the same or similar colors in some of your furnishings, but you have to mix it up with new colors. Ideally, you should toss in some contrasting colors to really break up your decor. For instance, white throw pillows on a black sofa is an excellent choice of contrasting colors that work well together.

Mistake #3 - Too Much Clutter

I think we've all been guilty of allowing our home to develop clutter. When you're busy balancing a full-time job, kids, finances and life in general, it's hard to find time to clean. Unfortunately, allowing clutter to develop in your home will hurt the decor. Make it a point to pick up your home every couple of days to keep it free of clutter. Rather than tossing your dirty clothes on the floor, perhaps you can carry them to the laundry room.

Mistake #4 - Poor Lighting

A fourth all-too-common home decorating mistake is not using enough lighting. Whether it's the living room, dining room, bedroom, kitchen, bathroom or foyer, these areas need plenty of lighting to benefit the decor. If you don't want to install new overhead lighting, you can always opt for a floor or table lamp.

Mistake #5 -Multiple Themes

Lastly, if you want to decorate room in a particular theme, stick with a single theme. For instance, if there's 'beachy' items in your bathroom, then stick with the beach theme. Using multiple themes will create a clashing atmosphere with no real sense of direction.
